The Caisse and the Environment
EMPHAZING RESPONSIBLE PRACTICES
The Caisse takes environmental criteria into consideration when making its investment decisions and acts in a responsible fashion by paying particular attention to the impact of its activities on the environment.
As specified in its Policy on Socially Responsible Investment, it expects companies in which it invests to take the steps required to respect and protect the environment.
Environmental criteria are among the factors Caisse managers must take into account when analyzing the risk associated with each investment. In addition, managers are required to encourage the companies in the Caisse’s portfolio to develop and adopt environmentally responsible policies and practices.
The Caisse also favours the disclosure of information on corporations’ environmental practices. It is a Member of the Carbon Disclosure Project, a coalition of global investors encouraging companies to disclose data on greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activities as well as the steps they take to reduce them. Seeking High Standards
The Caisse and its real estate subsidiaries, SITQ and Ivanhoe Cambridge, incorporate environmental criteria into the different aspects of their management and professions.
In the course of daily operations, the Caisse and its employees favour the judicious use of resources and sustainable development by:
- Reducing the volume of supplies used;
- Reusing and recycling supplies;
- Reducing energy consumption.
Managed by SITQ, the Caisse’s business office in Montréal, and the Price Building, where the Caisse’s head office in the city of Québec is located, have received the Go Green Plus environmental certification awarded by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Canada. Several other office buildings in the Caisse’s portfolio have also received this Go Green Plus certification.
While the office buildings it manages are energy efficient, SITQ implements measures to reduce its overall consumption of raw materials and natural resources. Control of lighting and the installation of devices to enhance the performance of ventilation systems or reduce the consumption of natural gas are some examples of this.
Specializing in the management of shopping centres, Ivanhoe Cambridge helps divert most recyclable material from landfills in its 60 centres throughout Canada. In addition, it saves energy by using adapted systems to control heating, air conditioning and lighting.
