Mission and Values

Excellence, Profitability and Economic Development

The mission of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec is to make profitable investments with the funds of public and private pension and insurance plans and organizations, while contributing to Québec’s economic development. These organizations are the Caisse’s ”clients”, which it calls its depositors.

Created in 1965, the Caisse is today one of the largest institutional fund managers in Canada and North America.

INVESTING IN QUÉBEC AND AROUND THE WORLD

Our teams of specialized managers invest in numerous financial products, such as stocks and bonds, as well as in companies and real estate. Investments are made in Québec, in Canada and on international markets, wherever attractive business opportunities can be found.

A SOLID FOUNDATION WITH STRONG VALUES
The Caisse’s officers and employees share strong values that guide their actions and the way they work. These values can be seen daily in their decisions and activities and the relationships the Caisse has with its employees and business partners.

These values are the following:

  • Excellence;
  • Ethics;
  • Boldness;
  • Transparency.

  • Generate a sustained return and provide its clients with quality advisory services;
  • Foster a corporate culture emphasizing team work and common values;
  • Assert its leadership in terms of governance and integrated management;
  • Recruit talented employees and become an employer of choice;

EMPHASIS ON A UNIFYING STRATEGIC PLAN
In 2006-2008, the Caisse emphasized four strategic priorities set out in its three-year plan. This plan is designed to achieve specific, measurable objectives:

  • Generate a return that meets clients’ expectations;
  • Contribute to Québec’s economic development;
  • Implement an efficient management framework that abides by any requirements set by law;
  • Strengthen operational levers to optimize its human and material resources.

AN INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY THAT GENERATES ATTRACTIVE RETURNS
In order to earn the best possible return on the funds it manages, the Caisse’s teams respect the six following principles of its investment philosophy:

1. Active Management
Managers act on opportunities in all financial markets, while always keeping economic, political and social issues in mind.

2. Fundamental Opportunistic Approach
Every investment decision is based on the actual value of the companies involved as well as their profitability potential over the medium and long terms.

3. Open Management
The Caisse uses the services of external managers or partners to complement its in-house expertise, particularly in the case of distant markets.

4. Internal Research and Investment Process
The Caisse’s investment activities are based on the research of its teams and a rigourous analytical process.

5. Risk Management
This means acting prudently by adequately assessing risk, and diversifying investments and management styles.

6. Accountability for the Caisse and its Managers
Managers are accountable for their actions and results.
